As they headed upstairs later, Lauren stayed to help Paige gather the remaining snacks.

“I can take something,” Wes said suddenly not four inches from her ear as he hovered right behind her, having appeared there by what felt like magic because she never so much as heard his approach.

It was a God-given miracle that she didn’t jump and send the tortilla chips flying everywhere. Without looking at him because… wow… she passed the bag over her shoulder. “Okay. You get that. I’ll get the cheese.”

He took the bag from her and ate a chip from it.

She scowled as she shook her head. “You’re supposed to carry that, not eat it.”

“It makes it lighter this way.” He ate another chip. “Kill two birds with one stone.”

Paige and Jared turned for the stairs and started up as Lauren followed them, Wes shadowing her as they got to the stairs.

“Oh, be sure to kill the lights,” Paige called down to them.

“Got it,” he said and reached out and plunged the basement into darkness behind them.

For some reason, Lauren had always had a fear of what lurked in basements when the light was off, and even with the safety light on the stairs, that much empty darkness behind her still freaked her out.

“Ugh. Why did they not put a light at the top?” she complained. “I hate that.”

“What? You think the boogie-monster is going to get you?” he asked, adding a low evil laugh that did nothing for her nerves. “BWHAHA!”

“Stop that. That’s not funny.”

“Stop that,” he mocked her. “Don’t eat the chips.” He ate one loudly. “Don’t turn off the light. You sure are bossy tonight, you know that?”

“Yeah, and you’re working my last nerve.”

“Sure it’s not second to last? I mean, just to make sure and everything.” At the top of the stairs, he shut the light off, followed her out, and closed the door.

“Are you ever serious?”

“Not if I can help it.”
